What is the Motorcycle Rider Course?
The motorcycle rider course, known as the Basic Rider Course (BRC), is a complete, hands-on course of instruction for motorcycle street riders ages 16 and up. No prior knowledge of motorcycling is required. All students enrolled in the BRC are required to have a valid driver’s license and/or a learner’s permit. The BRC is physically demanding and students should be in good physical health. Equally, a student must be comfortable with riding a bicycle and balancing him or herself on two wheels.

What will I learn?
This 15‐hour course begins with a review of the types of motorcycles, instruction in motorcycle control and protective gear. The riding/range portion of the program covers these riding skills on the second and third class days:

• Straight‐line riding
• Turning, shifting and braking
• Street riding strategies
• Hazard avoidance
• Advanced turning
• Maximum braking
• Handling special riding situations

Can I use my own equipment?
Students must utilize the motorcycles provided by the college.

What types of motorcycles are used in the BRC training program?
The bikes used in the BRC program are generally 125cc or 250cc street‐style motorcycles. They weigh approximately 200‐250 pounds and seat heights range from 24 to 27 inches (depending on the model selected). Rider coaches will match riders to the size bike that best fits their needs.

What do I need to bring?
You must wear protective gear. This includes the following:

• Helmet – ¾ or full face helmet, DOT approved
• Eye protection
• Sturdy over‐the‐ankle footwear (not cloth or canvas)
• Long sleeve shirt or jacket
• Long, non‐flair denim pants or equally durable material
• Full fingered gloves, preferably leather
• You may opt to bring a snack or lunch with you for the range portion of your class

What do I need to bring to the classroom for the BRC course offering?
For the classroom session, students need to bring the following:

• Pen and/or pencil
• Reading glasses – this is only if you require them to view slides, video monitors and/or paperwork
• Student Information Sheet
• Release Waiver, and Indemnification Agreement
• Campus map (if not familiar with the NRCC campus)
• Certificate of Completion of 5 hour eCourse

Who is eligible for the Basic Rider Course?
The 15‐hour Basic Rider Course (BRC) is for anyone who wants to learn to ride a motorcycle. (Those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to the classroom session.)
Other enrollment requirements include:

• Possessing a valid driver’s license and/or a learner’s permit
• Ability to balance on two wheels as in riding a bicycle
• Completion of an application for admission
• Completion of risk/liability waivers (all forms must be signed prior to the range portion of the class)

How long are the classes, and when are the classes offered?
Students are provided 15 hours of classroom and on-the-range motorcycle instruction under controlled range conditions. The 3-day program is designed for those individuals who want to learn to ride a motorcycle properly and safely.

Weekend Schedule
Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (all students)
Saturday and Sunday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (approximately)

Students must attend all 15 hours of training. Likewise students will be required to be on time for all scheduled sessions. No‐shows and late arrivals will forfeit their place in class and all tuition.
All classes begin promptly at scheduled time. Therefore, it is imperative that you be in class approximately 15 minutes prior to your class beginning. In order to receive a refund for a cancellation, NRCC must be notified at least 48 hours prior to your class. There will be no refunds for students who simply do not show up for class.

What happens if it rains?
Class will be conducted rain or shine. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing.

The classes fill quickly. Can I get on a waiting list?
There is no waiting list. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis.

Are BRC classes offered at other institutions?
BRC courses are offered throughout the state; for more information go to http://www.learn2ride.com.

Will the DMV accept an NRCC certificate if I am an out‐of‐state resident?
Rules and regulations vary depending on your state requirements. If you are an out‐of‐state resident, please check with your state’s DMV division to confirm if an NRCC certificate will be honored.

Do I need to register in order to take the class? If so, how do I register for the BRC?
Yes, everyone must register for the BRC class offering. The BRC classes award 1 college credit. If you have not taken a credit class at NRCC within the past three years, you will be required to fill out an Application for Admission to New River Community College. There is no fee to submit your application. The on‐line process can be completed within minutes, then you will be eligible to enroll in one of the BRC class offerings. You must pay your tuition at the time of registration.

Where are the BRC classes conducted?
All BRC class offerings are held at NRCC in Dublin. The lecture component of the class is conducted in Martin Hall, room 242 and on Parking Lot H for the range portion of the class. All Students should park in Parking Lot E.

What must I do to replace my DMV completion certificate / waiver or Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Completion Card?
The DMV license/waiver completion certificate can only be replaced 12 months or less from the original date issued. The MSF completion card can only be replaced 24 months or less from the date of issue. A $20 processing fee is charged for all replacement cards.

Once I have the “M2” classification on my driver’s license, will it always remain on my license?
No, you must request that the “M2” classification remain on your driver’s license upon your renewal at the DMV. Should your “M2” classification expire, you will be required to take the BRC course again, or take measures to meet the requirements through your local DMV. In most cases, there is an additional fee to apply the “M2” classification to your driver’s license. Please check with your local DMV division for the appropriate fee structure.
