Clubs/Student Organizations

In accordance with VCCS Policy 6.4.5, the State Board of Community Colleges encourages the development of a student activities program designed to promote educational and cultural experiences. Student activities are out-of-classroom activities that support the mission of the colleges and provide students with avenues for personal growth and enrichment. Through participation in clubs and organizations, or other planned activities, students develop a wide range of abilities, including intellectual, communication, athletic, and leadership skills. Students develop self-confidence, interpersonal skills, and an appreciation for other cultures and lifestyles. Finally, students develop a sense of integrity, purpose, and social responsibility that empowers them to be productive within and beyond the college community.

The State Board shall recognize and encourage honorary, scholastic, service organizations, and sports clubs that do not restrict membership based on race, color, gender, age, religion, disability, national origin, sexual orientation or other non-merit factors. Private clubs, private associations, social fraternities, and social sororities shall not be recognized by the VCCS.

The following regulations and procedures apply to all student activity programs in the community colleges of the VCCS:

  • The entire program of student activities shall be under college supervision.
  • There shall be a faculty or staff sponsor for each student organization.
  • All student activity funds shall be deposited with and expended through the college business office, subject to State Board policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to such funds.
  • Each college, with the approval of its local board, shall adopt its own regulations and procedures to implement the above policy.
  • All student activity programs and recognized organizations must comply with the VCCS’s nondiscrimination policy.

How to Form a Club at NRCC

Club Membership and Participation

  • Any currently enrolled student or group of students may request to form a club at NRCC.
  • Community members and alumni are both welcomed and encouraged to participate in New River Community College student organizations if allowed by the club’s constitution and/or National Charter if applicable.
  • If the club receives a funding allocation through the Student Activities Budget, the majority of the club’s membership must be comprised of currently enrolled students.
  • All club officers are required to be currently enrolled students.
  • All club meetings and club activities fall under the purview of the Student Code of Conduct whether the meeting or activity is on campus or off campus.

Club Formation Procedure

  • Student/students interested in forming a club at NRCC should contact the Student Activities Office at New River Community College to notify the Activities Advisor of their wish to form a club. (The Activities Advisor can offer guidance, direction, and assistance throughout the club formation process.)
  • Students interested in forming a club should attempt to recruit additional students through the various communication channels available through the college. Examples include announcements via the weekly Student Activity Announcements, use of informational tables in the Student Lounge, or specified areas at the Christiansburg Mall site, Bulletin Board announcements, and by word of mouth. (The Activities Advisor can offer guidance, direction, and assistance throughout this process.)
  • Each club or student organization must have a faculty or staff member willing to serve as the club sponsor. It’s the responsibility of the students interested in starting a new club to secure their own club sponsor.
  • Once a sufficient amount of student interest exists a potential club roster should be submitted to the Student Activities Office. The roster should list all potential club members and the faculty/staff sponsor.
  • All new student organizations/clubs are required to develop and submit a Club Constitution/Charter and an applicable set of Club By-Laws. The Constitution speaks to the purpose/mission of the organization and the By-Laws detail the actual functioning of the club. The Activities Advisor can provide guidance and assistance in the development of these documents. The staff sponsor should work closely with interested students to develop the Constitution and By-Laws. Once completed the Constitution and By-Laws must be submitted to the Activities Advisor.
  • In addition to the Constitution and Club By-Laws prospective clubs must complete and submit a Student Organization Registration form. The form can be accessed under “Forms” in the Student Activities Menu at Student Activities.
