TAKE 10 TO PREPARE
TWO MINUTES . . .
Log into NRCC Alert and verify that your information is correct.
EIGHT MINUTES . . .
Peruse the points below to familiarize yourself with specific emergency procedures at NRCC.
FIRE
- Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes by locating the evacuation maps in each classroom or area of the campus.
- Determine the safest and quickest route for your personal safety – and take it.
- If possible, activate a fire alarm or alert others to the presence of danger.
- As soon as possible, dial 9-1-1.
- Feel doors with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, DO NOT OPEN IT.
- DO NOT use elevators.
- If clothing catches fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL.
- Once outside, move a safe distance from the building. Move to a previously-determine assembly point for your class (when applicable).
- Do NOT re-enter any building until instructed to do so.
MEDICAL
- If someone requires immediate medical attention, call 9-1-1 or have someone call 9-1-1 as soon as possible.
- Provide first aid or medical assistance ONLY if you are trained to do so.
- Follow instructions of the 9-1-1 dispatcher closely. Do not hang up until instructed to do so.
- Do NOT move the individual unless he or she is in immediate danger.
- If the individual is conscious, talk to him or her. Ask questions about any medical conditions that can be conveyed to first responders and/or 9-1-1 dispatch to provide the best response possible.
- Call NRCC Security when feasible to do so: 540-674-3646.
- Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are available at the following locations:
- Godbey Hall: Business Office and Information Desk
- Martin Hall: Library and Student Lounge (counselor's office)
- Rooker Hall: Advising Center (upper level) and Facilities Services (lower level)
- Edwards Hall: Workforce Development and Room 125
- Christiansburg Site: front desk
SUSPICIOUS PERSON OR OBJECT
Suspicious Person
- Do NOT confront the person.
- Do not let anyone into a locked room or building.
- Do not block the person’s access to an exit.
- Call 9-1-1 or NRCC Security at 540-674-3646 as soon as possible.
Suspicious Object
- Do NOT handle or touch the object.
- Do NOT use your cell phone (or other transmitting device) near the object.
- Encourage people to leave the area and retreat to a safe location.
- Prepare to evacuate (taking personal belongings with you).
- Call 9-1-1 or NRCC Security at 540-674-3646 as soon as possible.
BOMB THREAT
- Call 9-1-1 or NRCC Security at 540-674-3646 as soon as possible.
- Take note of the caller’s voice, accent, phrasing, and specifics of the threat. For more information, consult the Bomb Threat Report Form.
- Stay in place unless directed to evacuate.
- If directed to evacuate, do not re-enter any building until instructed to do so.
EARTHQUAKE
Response
- If you are indoors, DROP to the floor. Stay there until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.
- COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture.
- HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.
- Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
- Don’t use a doorway except if you know that it’s a strongly supported, load-bearing doorway and it’s close to you. Many inside doorways are lightly constructed and don’t offer protection.
- Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.
- DO NOT use elevators.
- If you are outdoors, stay there. Move away from buildings, overhangs, trees and power lines to a clear area such as a large open public area or field.
- If you are in a moving vehicle, stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings or trees.
Once the shaking stops:
- Exit the building when safety permits and move to the designated assembly area.
- Use emergency exit route information posted throughout the building to determine the quickest route out.
- Expect aftershocks.
- Only use the telephone for emergency calls.
- Be aware that utilities such as gas, power and water lines may be damaged. If you know of damaged utilities, report the issue.
- Wait for instructions from college officials and police.
TORNADO
- If the area is under a Tornado WARNING, seek shelter immediately. Go to:
- The nearest Storm Shelter on campus (classrooms and other areas with blue “Storm Shelter” signs) OR
- An appropriate area that will provide protection – closets, interior rooms, interior hallways, areas free of windows or glass.
- Stay away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls.
- Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside.
- Use your arms to protect your head and neck. Protect your body from flying debris with any available furniture or sturdy equipment.
- If you are outside with no shelter, consider these options:
- Immediately get into a vehicle, buckle your seat belt and try to drive to the closest sturdy shelter.
If you are unable to get to a sturdy shelter, stay in the car with the seat belt on.
Put your head down below the windows; cover your head with your hands and a blanket,
coat or other cushion, if possible.
- If you are outside and unable to get to a car or a building for protection,
move away from the tornado’s path at a right angle. If there is no time to escape,
lie flat in the nearest depression (ex. ditch or ravine). Cover your head with your arms.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
- Move away from the site of the hazard to a safe location (up wind if possible).
- Call 911.
- Follow instructions of Emergency Personnel.
- Alert others to stay clear of the area.
- Notify Emergency Personnel if you have been exposed to the hazard or have information about its release.
POWER OUTAGE
- Remain calm.
- Move cautiously to a lighted area. Exits may be indicated by lighted signs, if the emergency power is operating.
- If emergency lighting is unavailable and insufficient natural light exists to make a safe exit possible, notify NRCC Security and wait for assistance.
- Provide assistance to others.
- Evacuate the building only if directed to do so.
- Exit calmly and carefully.
- DO NOT re-enter building until authorized.
- Monitor NRCC Alert and local media for campus closings, delays or updates.
ACTIVE SHOOTER
In an active shooter event, the only correct course of action is the one that keeps you alive. IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU PLAN A PERSONAL RESPONSE FOR SUCH AN EVENT.
Options include:
Lockdown
Essentially this is an option to barricade where you are and remain until help arrives. See Emergency Lockdown Procedures for details.
Run, Hide, Fight
- Run and evacuate if you can. Have an escape route in mind. Leave valuables behind and keep hands visible.
- Hide in an area outside of the shooter's view. Block entry to your hiding place and lock doors. Turn off lights and silence electronic devices.
- Fight as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger. Attempt to incapacitate the shooter. Act with physical aggression.
ALICE
- Alert – You are alerted to the presence of a shooter. This is the time to execute your personal plan. The following actions are among those to be considered:
- Lockdown
- Inform -- As you are seeking a place to hide/lockdown or evacuating the building/campus, let other know what is going on. Monitor college messaging systems and local media for updates.
- Counter -- (see Fight above). Only take on a shooter when you have no other choice. Create confusion, attempt to disarm, yell, throw things – whatever it take to prevent the shooter from aiming and firing until he/she can be subdued.
- Evacuate – (see Run above). If you are able to evacuate when you learn of the presence of an active shooter, do so. Otherwise, consider lockdown/hide.
