EDUCAUSE 2005 Conference
Attended by Adam Bryant and Marsha Underwood
“Transforming the Academy: Dreams and Reality”, EDUCAUSE 2005 was organized into several tracks with concurrent sessions,
featured speakers, and corporate sessions and also included an exhibit hall.
We attended the EDUCAUSE conference with hopes that the sessions and professional interactions would provide insight into how to
better serve DE faculty and their students. We, in reality, walked away from the conference with validation that although New River
is a small and rural community college, we are light years ahead of larger institutions in our attitudes, practices, and use of
technology in regards to online learning and teaching.

American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) Conference
Attended by Harriette Roadman
I am very pleased that I was able to attend this conference. I learned much about online teaching and distance education, as well as
some tips on effective classroom teaching. I was able to meet teachers from all over the United States and to talk about the
similarities and differences of our campuses, student populations, and course objectives. My attendance at this conference is a
distinct benefit to me professionally, and I hope that I may continue to attend the annual conference each year in the future.
I am grateful to the Title III Grant and New River Community College for providing me with this opportunity.

Effective and More Creative Strategies to Boost Web Presence and E-Mail Effectiveness
Attended by Nancy Evans
Thanks to Title 3, I was able to attend a 2 day conference concentrating on Effective and More Creative Strategies to Boost Web Presence
and E-Mail Effectiveness. It had 2 concurrent sessions streams one on E-marketing essential, and the second on E-marketing strategies.
I attended with a colleague, so we were able to trade notes and pointers that were discussed in the session the other attended.
So, I feel I got more for “your” money.
I teach the MKT 282, ecommerce class in the fall semester. It is a required course in NRCC's marketing, graphic design communication,
and small business management AAS degree at NRCC and is an optional course in a NRCC’s IT degree. This conference was jammed full of
topics that I cover in my course. It has to do with harnessing technology to benefit the organization/company that my students will be
hired into. It is so important in technology AND marketing to stay current. So I am very excited about learning what other companies
are currently doing and what these "experts" say they should be doing to make e-mail, web design more effective, efficient.
This conference was geared toward marketers, not educators. So, the added bonus of networking with professionals from IT development,
banking, travel agencies, landscaping business, etc who are in the positions of using the technology to move their company forward was
extremely valuable as well. I have lots of stories to share with the students during my next semester of MKT 282.
The conference addresses issues I discuss in class, such as effective use of email and web site enhancements, finding new technology to
create a more pleasing online shopping experience, driving customers to web sites, engaging them while they are there… collecting data
on them while they are navigating through the web site... the list goes on and on.
Thank you for the opportunity to attend this conference.
